Pumpkin soup, don't mind if I do!

A lovely aroma of pumpkin soup draws my artist pal and I into the shop front Gallery at North Metropolitan TAFE (149 Beaufort Street, Perth) to enjoy some complimentary soup and of course, hear the artist talks- by newest Western Australian Fibre and Textile Association (WAFTA) residents Robi Szalay and Liz Arnold.

Before the talk starts I have a brief look around to find two different disciplines of work, both textile artists that are working in similar mediums.  Liz Arnold's jewellery works, in particular, show a great example of craft in a fine art practice, helping to blur the lines in history between the division of art and craft.

These works were organic but yet quite striking with their bold colour palette. This captivating work shows a sense of personal adornment to the pieces as was intended to be explored in her concept. Liz's fine textile techniques highlight the sensitivity in her making.

Although my eyes can't help but be drawn back to Robi Szalay's work- Do you see the black and ivory garment hanging in the back of the image.. Regrettably I didn't get back there to take a photograph of the work. But my, my what a delicate, beautiful and intimate work this is!  Robi explores the physical nature of lace and how it mimics ideas of connection, that is so essential to humankind. I think her work does show a physical connection within the body through her execution of making the material intimate and fragile.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Robi Szalay at the South Perth Emerging Artist Exhibition and we talked about her award-winning work that was also made on this residency with WAFTA.

I feel delighted to have been to this WAFTA talk to hear both artists intentions before the work is made. It was a humbling feeling to see the artists talk about their challenges and ideas openly with a sense of uncertainty of what the final work might be. This defiantly has boosted my self-confidence towards my own studio practice.

Moral of the story we aren't all that different in the end, most people like pumpkin soup.
